Find the timezone at a coordinate, what the clock there says now, and when it next changes.

How Timezones Work

What is a timezone?

Not a slice of the globe but a region that agrees on a clock, and on when to change it. The boundaries follow borders and coastlines, not meridians, which is why a timezone map looks nothing like neat stripes.

Each region has an identifier in the tz database, the list every operating system uses: Europe/Berlin, America/New_York, Asia/Kathmandu. The identifier is the useful thing, because the offset changes and the identifier does not.

How to Use
  • Paste a coordinate in any notation: 50.0267, 8.5584, 50°01.602′N 8°33.501′E, 32UMA6836541693, 9F2C2HG5+M8.
  • Latitude first in every written form.
  • The answer gives the identifier, the clock there right now, the offset, and the next change with a countdown in days.
  • Points at sea work too, and answer with a nautical offset.
  • The dice looks up a random example.
Summer Time

Roughly a third of the world moves its clocks twice a year, a third never has, and a few places have stopped recently. Brazil abolished it in 2019; Arizona never adopted it while the rest of the United States did.

So three answers are all normal: summer time is in force now, it is not but a change is coming on a given date, or the zone has no change scheduled at all. The last one is not a missing answer.

A transition is given in the local clock, which is how a change is announced: at 03:00 the clocks go back to 02:00.

Two Things That Look Wrong

At sea the sign is inverted. Open water is covered by zones named Etc/GMT+2 and the like, and those carry the POSIX convention, which is backwards: Etc/GMT+2 means UTC minus two hours. The answer says so whenever it happens, because otherwise one of the two numbers looks like a mistake.

The abbreviation is sometimes just the offset. CEST and MST exist because they are used locally; much of the world has no such abbreviation, so the tz database writes +0545 and that is the correct answer, not a gap.

Privacy & Security: the boundaries and the timezone rules are both held on this server, so the coordinate you paste is never forwarded to a timezone service. There is no map on this page, because a map would make your browser fetch tiles from someone else and the coordinate would travel with the request for them.

Latitude first. Press Enter to look up.
