How Hash Generator Works
What is Hashing?

A hash function takes input data of any size and produces a fixed-length output (the hash or digest). The same input always produces the same hash, but even a tiny change in the input produces a completely different hash.

Hashes are one-way functions: you cannot reconstruct the original input from the hash value.

How to Use
  • Type or paste text into the input field. All hashes update live as you type.
  • Use Upload file or drag and drop a file to hash its contents.
  • Click the copy icon next to any hash to copy it.
  • Paste an expected hash into the Verify field to check if it matches. The algorithm is detected automatically.
Supported Algorithms
MD5128-bit hash (32 hex chars). Fast but cryptographically broken. Still used for checksums.
SHA-1160-bit hash (40 hex chars). Deprecated for security, common in legacy systems and Git.
SHA-256256-bit hash (64 hex chars). Part of SHA-2 family. The most widely used secure hash today.
SHA-384384-bit hash (96 hex chars). Truncated SHA-512 with different initial values.
SHA-512512-bit hash (128 hex chars). Strongest SHA-2 variant, often faster on 64-bit systems.
CRC3232-bit checksum (8 hex chars). Not cryptographic, used for error detection in network protocols.
Adler-3232-bit checksum (8 hex chars). Faster than CRC32, used in zlib/gzip compression.
Important Notes
  • MD5 and SHA-1 are not suitable for security purposes (password hashing, digital signatures). Use SHA-256 or stronger.
  • For password storage, use specialized algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2, not raw hash functions.
  • File uploads are limited to 10 MB. All processing runs in your browser.
