How Percentages Work
A percentage is a fraction written out of a hundred. Twenty percent is twenty hundredths, so taking a percentage of a number means multiplying it by that fraction.
Every calculation on this page is that one step, arranged differently: divide by a hundred and multiply, divide and multiply by a hundred to go the other way, or divide by the factor to undo it.
- Find the line that reads like your question and fill in the two numbers. The answer appears as you type, on that line only.
- The last two lines work backwards. They recover the number you started from, which is what removing a tax from a gross price or finding a pre-discount price needs.
- Every line shows the arithmetic it used, so a figure can be checked rather than trusted.
- Decimals at the top applies to every line. On Auto each answer is shown as precisely as it needs to be.
- A comma or a point is accepted as the decimal separator, and spaces or dots used to group thousands are ignored.

- Percentage points and percent are not the same. A rate moving from 4% to 6% has risen by 2 percentage points, which is a rise of 50 percent.
- Percentages do not reverse. Adding 10 percent and then removing 10 percent lands below where it started, because the second step is taken of a larger number.
- The order matters in a change. From 100 to 125 is a rise of 25 percent, but from 125 to 100 is a fall of 20 percent, since each is measured against its own starting value.
- Removing a percentage is not the same as taking it off the total. A gross price of 119 with 19% tax has a net of 100, not 96.39, because the tax was added to the net rather than taken from the gross. The last line does that correctly.
- A displayed figure can be rounded to the chosen number of decimals. The arithmetic under each line always shows the full value.
